TikTok wants advertising budgets beyond its own platform

TikTok is expanding its advertising network beyond the TikTok app, giving advertisers access to inventory across nearly 400,000 third-party apps. TikTok says the network reaches more than 1 billion daily active users, with around half not using TikTok itself. Advertisers can extend existing campaigns into this inventory, with TikTok’s AI deciding how budget is allocated between TikTok and external placements.

Why it matters: TikTok is evolving from a social platform into a broader advertising network, competing more directly with Google and Meta for off-platform budgets. For advertisers, the opportunity is incremental reach, but inventory quality, transparency and genuine incrementality will need scrutiny.

Advertising awareness drives 17% of brand consideration

New Thinkbox-commissioned research covering 1,478 brands across more than 120 categories found advertising awareness accounts for an average 17% of brand consideration. The effect isn’t just direct: advertising awareness also influences perceptions such as quality, reputation and value for money, which in turn affect consideration.

The findings suggest ad awareness could be a useful leading indicator of effectiveness, moving measurement beyond whether someone was technically exposed to an advert towards whether they actually remember seeing it.

Why it matters: Reach and impressions tell us whether advertising had the opportunity to be seen; ad awareness tells us whether it actually registered. That could make it a valuable bridge between media delivery metrics and longer-term outcomes such as consideration and sales.

Meta wants consumers to buy products without leaving AI conversations

Meta is developing conversational commerce capabilities that allow consumers to discover, discuss and purchase products directly within AI conversations. It is working with Shopify to enable purchases through its Business Agent on Messenger, while integrations with Adyen, PayPal, Shopify and Stripe are being developed to support shopping within Meta AI.

Why it matters: AI assistants are moving from helping consumers discover products to potentially completing the transaction. If this behaviour scales, brands will need to optimise for discovery and conversion inside AI conversations, not simply driving people to websites.
