Time Magazine starts serving ad payloads directly to AI scraping agents

In an industry-first monetisation move, Time has partnered with AI ad tech platform Mobian to begin serving sponsored ad payloads directly to autonomous AI web crawlers and scraping agents. To improve its visibility in conversational search, Time recently converted its web architecture to serve lightweight, text-only Markdown versions of its pages specifically for AI crawlers. Now, the publisher is embedding sponsored FAQ-formatted ad content directly into those Markdown files. When automated agents (such as ChatGPT or Claude crawlers) scrape Time's authoritative articles, they ingest these sponsored brand payloads alongside editorial text. The objective is to shape how generative AI models answer future user prompts about participating brands, creating a direct pipeline to influence LLM outputs at the source.

Why it matters

  • Monetising the Bot Flood: Rather than blocking AI crawlers or letting them scrape content for free, publishers are finding direct mechanisms to monetise synthetic traffic.
  • Influencing the Answer Engine: Advertisers are paying a premium to influence AI agents directly. Pitching a single human consumer impacts one person, whereas influencing an LLM shapes generative answers for millions of conversational searchers.
  • The Rise of the Two-Track Web: Digital publishing is bifurcating into visual HTML built for human readers and stripped-down Markdown files optimized for machine ingestion.

Google Ads restores standalone Target CPA and Target ROAS bidding labels

Google Ads has officially updated its Smart Bidding strategy naming conventions, decoupling Target CPA (Cost Per Acquisition) and Target ROAS (Return On Ad Spend) from their bundled "Maximize Conversions" and "Maximize Conversion Value" interface wrappers.

Previously, setting a cost target appeared as "Maximize conversions with a Target CPA", which caused confusion for performance marketers trying to differentiate between pure volume bidding and strict efficiency targets. Starting this month, Google is restoring standalone Target CPA and Target ROAS names across the Google Ads user interface, Google Ads Editor, and the Google Ads API. Google confirmed that backend auction algorithms remain completely unchanged; the update is purely an organisational change to simplify campaign setup and reporting clarity.

Why it matters

  • Clearer Campaign Intent: Performance managers can easily differentiate at a glance between campaigns optimising for maximum conversion volume within budget versus those constrained by strict cost-per-acquisition targets.
  • API Developer Alignment: For engineering and programmatic teams, the change aligns interface reporting with standalone TARGET_CPA and TARGET_ROAS strategy types inside the Google Ads API.
  • Zero Auction Disruption: Because backend bidding mechanics remain identical, performance leads gain interface transparency without needing to modify active campaign structures.

Google opens Search Console "Platform Properties" to all accounts worldwide

Google Search Console (GSC) has expanded its Platform Properties feature to all accounts globally, allowing creators and brands to measure search performance for assets hosted on social networks they do not legally own.

The system supports four major platforms at launch: Instagram, TikTok, X (formerly Twitter), and YouTube. Historically, Search Console only tracked verified domain names or URL prefixes, leaving third-party social posts and short-form video clips that rank inside Google Search and Discover feeds invisible to SEO analysts. By authorising a direct account connection in GSC, marketers can now view dedicated performance dashboards tracking impressions, clicks, average position, and exact search query data for their social posts.

Why it matters

  • Search Query Data for Social: Unlocks exact search term data showing which Google queries drive users to specific TikTok videos or Instagram profiles.
  • Tracking Entity Footprints: Validates that a brand's search presence extends far beyond its corporate website, treating social content as measurable search endpoints.
  • Unified SEO & Social Workflows: Merges social content performance into standard GSC reporting, encouraging search and social teams to co-optimise caption writing and video titles for live search intent.
